With both sides coming in from vital victories last week, a win in this match was vital to solidify chances of a finals berth.
Newcastle started the match the better side with Adam Taggart and James Virgili both going close in the opening quarter of the match.
Sydney FC nearly stole a goal against the run of play just 30 minutes in as a poor Ruben Zadkovich back pass allowed Alessandro Del Piero to find Ranko Despotovic but was denied by a quick reaction from Mark Birighitti.
Another chance fell to Sydney moments later, and again it was Del Piero with the assist as he sent in a free kick for Sasa Ognenovski whose header was only ballooned over the bar.
It was a tight tussle in midfield which chocked the chances, with neither side able to really create much as the sides headed to the break scoreless.
Newcastle started the second half well with Zadkovich and Taggart linking up well to allow Zadkovic a powerful shot that was well saved by Vedran Janjetovic.
On the hour mark Sydney hit the lead and again Del Piero was crucial as his corner found Ognenovski who was able to head this one home.
13 minutes later and Newcastle handed Sydney a second as Del Piero was brought down by Taylor Regan but dusted himself off to score the penalty and seal the match for Sydney.
Newcastle tried to come back late in the match but it wasn’t to be as Sydney held their lead for their second straight win.
