A couple of days ago action film star Sybil Danning and producer Les Thomas sat down in Burbank to talk about their new project. While readers will remember frequent criticisms of prior cloud gaming concepts, most of those have been aimed solely at casual gamers or have been the square peg in the round hole type ideas. This upcoming game, tentatively named Sybil Danning’s Ruger is a first person shooter based on Sybil’s character from LA Bounty.
Sybil Danning, besides still looking amazingly beautiful is best known for her roles in Hercules with Lou Ferrigno, Chained Heat with the Exorcist’s Linda Blair, Howling 2 and LA Bounty which she wrote herself. She has undergone somewhat of a career revival with roles in Rob Zombie’s Halloween and the Tarrantino/Rodriguez production, Grindhouse. Not the type to let an opportunity pass, Sybil is using the attention to reestablish her name in creative media and pop culture.
It is almost in a Grindhouse type theme that Ruger will materialize. While it is still early in the development cycle, Ruger will be a highly stylized, almost comic book styled shooter. The story, written by Sybil is being held close to the vest but watching LA Bounty is sure to shed at least some light to what it’s all about. There is definitely room in the faux-retro market for more names than Tarantino and Rodriguez, and Sybil Danning certainly has the pedigree to be credible. Incredibly the game and a Ruger film are being developed simultaneously.
As previously noted, Ruger is planned as a cloud server game with a distribution deal already in place in Sybil’s native Europe. While having grown up with her movies and loving that genre of action and horror films, this writer would love to the game eventually come to the US. However, serious cloud gaming remains a hard sell here and is much more commercially viable in Europe and Asia. That bodes well for Ruger, as Sybil and her films have a large fan base on both continents. It is with that in mind, it makes Sybil Danning’s Ruger the first viable cloud gaming concept for core gamers.
