SXSW: Pachter believes Wii U won't sell as much as PS4 or Xbox 720

On March 9, gaming analyst Michael Pachter held a presentation at this year's SXSW (South by South West) which ends on March 17. Since Pachter is known for making negative statements about Nintendo, he decided to do so. One of the slides from his presentation were uploaded to Twitter and it described how Wii U will essentially sell much less than PS4 and Xbox 720.

It's important to know that Michael Pachter isn't against Nintendo, but he's simply skeptical about their new Wii U console. Sales have been dwindling and it's reasonable to think the way that Pachter has. One thing that Pachter doesn't take into consideration is that not many people know that the Wii U is a new system. Once Nintendo makes this clear in some way, Wii U sales will ultimately increase. Another thing that Pachter doesn't take into consideration is that once more games are released for the system, sales will increase once more.

The slide from Pachter's presentation states that the next generation of consoles will most likely be the last. At the current sales rate, Wii U will sell less than 50 million units in it's lifetime. The PS4 and Xbox 720 however, will sell between 85 and 95 million units. This is a reasonable prediction as Nintendo is struggling, but it's likely that Pachter put this presentation together before Nintendo's dramatic stock increase that happened on March 8.

If Pachter made these statements about the 3DS when it was 4 months old, he would've predicted that the 3DS wouldn't sell as much in the long run. The 3DS is a little over 2 years old now and it's one of the fastest selling systems of all time. It's important to remember that Pachter is simply doing his job and he isn't against Nintendo at all, he just isn't a fan of the Wii U. Is Pachter's sales prediction right? We'll have to wait a few years and see.
