SXSW crash: 2 killed, 23 injured by drunk driver in Austin, Texas

A driver who was intoxicated was fleeing from the police when his car crashed into a crowd at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas early Thursday morning. The crash killed two persons and injured at least 23 others according to a CNN report on Thursday. Of the injured, five persons are in critical condition.

The two persons – a man and a woman - who were killed were driving a moped when the accident occurred. The crowd that the driver drove into was reportedly leaving a nightclub.

Prior to the vehicle striking the crowd of people, the driver of the car was driving the wrong way on a one-way street. When police tried to stop the car, it sped up, nearly hit a police officer, and then drove into the crowd of people.

Art Acevedo, Austin’s chief of police, said that the suspect is now in custody and faces two counts of capital murder.

The names of the driver and the deceased have not been released to the media.

South by Southwest (SXSW) is an annual event in Austin which features film, interactive and music festivals.
