SXSW 2014 Midnighter feature film and short film lineup revealed

Be very afraid.

Dan Stevens stars in Adam Wingard's "The Guest"
Snoot Entertainment, Sundance Institute

Fresh off last week's announcement of the South by Southwest (SXSW) standard feature film lineup, SXSW organizers revealed the full slate of Midnighter (horror/thriller/controversial) feature films and the multi-genre short film lineup Wednesday that will surely excite the most blood thirsty and bright eyed film lovers.

Included in the lineup of 10 Midnighter features are eight world premieres and the full short film lineup includes 113 different titles selected from a record 4,429 submissions. The short films will be shown in 11 separate curated programs during the festival.

The high demand for a place in the SXSW short film lineup most likely has to deal with the festival's Oscar and BAFTA eligibility. Winners of select SXSW short film awards are then eligible for Oscar consideration while any U.K. made short film becomes BAFTA eligible simply by screening at SXSW.

Looking at the Midnighter features, the eight world premieres feature star-studded titles like "Home" starring Naya Rivera ("Glee"), "13 Sins" featuring "Sons of Anarchy" star Ron Perlman and "Late Phases" featuring Ethan Embry from SXSW 2013 award winner "Cheap Thrills."

In addition to those world premiere films, the two non-world premiere Midnighter films coming to SXSW 2014 are nothing to sneeze at by any means. In fact, they could wind up as the strongest of the 2014 Midnighter lineup. For starters, Sundance favorite "The Guest" comes to SXSW from director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett who created past festival favorite "You're Next." Also, don't look past TIFF Midnight Madness selection Oculus starring former "Doctor Who" companion Karen Gillan.

The full 2014 SXSW Midnighter film lineup appears below. More information on the 2014 SXSW film festival including screening info and badge options is available here. Get your planning started now if you haven't started already. Only one month until SXSW 2014!
