SXSW 2014: Kat Candler's 'Hellion' offers volatile family drama

Sundance Selects

Kat Candler's acclaimed coming-of-age family drama "Hellion" starring Josh Wiggins, Aaron Paul and Juliette Lewis will screen at SXSW on March 9.

"Hellion" premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and will be featured at this year's SXSW.

Paul plays Hollis, a grief-stricken widower and mostly absentee father to two young boys. The eldest, Jacob (Wiggins) is a troublemaker and the younger seems to be on the same path.

Nothing is easy for this family, and things just continue to go downhill for them when the state steps in.

The film offers a stark portrait of a family on the brink of dissolution set against the haunting backdrop of the refineries of Southeast Texas.

Sundance Selects acquired the North American distribution rights for "Hellion" and plans to release the film on VOD and in theaters later this year.

A brief clip from the film can be seen at:

Here's the full SXSW synopsis:

Obsessed with heavy metal music and motocross, the actions of 13-year-old Jacob has begun to raise concerns, especially when it starts to involve his little brother Wes. While the boys’ father Hollis loves his sons, he is still reeling from the loss of their mother, spending more time at the bar or working on his damaged beach house than with them. When the authorities catch wind of the increasingly volatile situation, Wes is taken into custody by his Aunt Pam. In Wes’ absence, Jacob becomes increasingly driven by two things: winning a motocross race and getting his brother back.
