There’s nothing like your family’s movie traditions during the holidays. From “A Christmas Story,” “It’s a Wonderful Life” or “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town”—or, in my household at least, “Love Actually,” “Batman Returns” and quite possibly very soon, “Beethoven’s Christmas Adventure”—the movies your family has grown with over the years play a tremendous part in bringing all of you together in the spirit of the season.
Sometimes though, we really do need a different flavor to take in the season between the usual cinematic candidates, and a good documentary about winter this time of year, even the right episode from a show like the Discovery Channel’s “North America,” can do just that, helping us take in the moment, to remember it just a little bit better.
The right documentary can be a lot of fun. It’s a taste of the unexpected, and can be about a wide variety of topics—animals, history or even the weather itself.
Why not give it a try? Ask your family what they might be into checking out. Find one that will be playing on TV, or do a quick search on Netflix.
And if you really want to ensure you find a quality documentary (especially, come to think of it, if it’s on the Discovery Channel), check out another article I wrote for an easy checklist to keep in mind.
Switch it up a bit this holiday season. You won’t regret it.
