Swine Flu and schools: 2,000 cases in 10 days at Washington college

Swine Flu hitting schools
Will the swine flu/ H1N1 continue to worsen and spread (KSY)

At least 2,000 Washington State University (WSU) students at the Pullman campus have come down with the H1N1 influenza/ Swine Flu.WSU Health and Wellness Services posted the following statement on the university's A/ H1N1 information blog:

We estimate that we have been in contact with about 2,000 students with influenza-like illness in the first ten days of our fall semester.

At this time of year, we would typically only see a handful of patients with influenza-like illness,"

The University states that their numbers may be low as they have no way to know the exact number of additional ill students who are handled by healthcare providers in the local community as well as ones who simply stay home.

The university had put together flu self-care kits which contain hand sanitizer, a thermometer, painkillers, throat lozenges, sport drinks and tissues. They have distributed 1,2000 kits and are asking all sick students to self-care at home,  isolating themselves as much as possible in an effort to reduce the spread of the virus.

The college did not cancel any activities including Saturday's big football game between Stanford and Washington State. They have all ill students (including players) not to attend and have added hand sanitizing stations for attendees to use.

If this is just the beginning of what many experts expect to be a much stronger epidemic this Autumn and Winter: just how will schools be able to cope as more and more students fall ill?

I don't think people are realizing how bad it could get this winter - the symptoms may be mild now but there has already been a case where the medicine isn't working. People need to stay home if they get sick!!!

Yep, I'm getting my kids vaccinated! I'm terrified of this, especially when it comes to my youngest who has a weak immune system.

When this hits hard I really wonder how many will be prepared we all have time to prepare but not many will stock up on supplies or get a plan in order. Too bad for them

Hopefully other schools can learn from these early outbreaks at colleges.
