Swimming safely with children

Living in Southern California, there is no shortage of outdoor water fun with all the beaches, pools, water parks, rivers and lakes. While professional swimming lessons are a great idea for children, many parents make the mistake of waiting until their children are in elementary school to begin the formal swim training process. Swimming lessons should begin as soon as a child can walk so they grow up feeling comfortable in water long before they gain independence in water.

Orange County's Swim Venture uses a fun and imaginative approach to help students create a lifelong love for swimming. Swim Venture has three locations in Orange County that offer swimming programs for children of all ages in warm indoor and outdoor pools. Swim Venture is committed to reducing the number of children that drown every year by teaching children how to swim as soon as they can learn to walk. Their entire staff are CPR and lifeguard certified with a minimum of two years early childhood education experience. Swim Venture offers free parent and me classes for babies at least 8 weeks old to 3 years old. The parent and me classes meet once a week for eight weeks and teach parents how to make their children feel safer in and around water. Swim Venture also offers a toddler program for toddlers who are ready for independent swimming by teaching them how to hold their breath underwater and float on their back.

Water safety is something to be taken very seriously, especially in Southern California. The CDC reports that among children 1 to 4 years old, most drownings occured in residential swimming pools where the children who drowned were last seen in the home, had been out of sight less than five minutes and were in the care of one or both parents at the time. Parents need to take every possible safety precaution including the use of safety gates and nets around swimming pools and spas, but children also need the right tools to help them learn to swim until they ready for independence in the water. For the proper tools for each stage in your child's swimming development, look to Swim Ways line of Swim Steps products.

Swim Ways has been a partner to children learning how to swim for over 40 years by developing the tools they need to swim safely. The Swim Steps program is a specially designed and proven way to help kids gradually gain confidence in the water. For Step 1 and basic water introduction, start with the Swim Diaper and the Baby Spring Float Activity Center with Canopy from Swim Ways. The Baby Spring Float Activity Center is the ultimate in baby pool floats because it provides the safety and security your baby needs to have fun in the pool while protecting his fragile skin from the sun. There is a mesh play space for toys and splashing water and the entire float folds easily and stores in its carrying bag. The Swim Ways Baby Spring Float Activity Center with Canopy and the Swim Diaper are perfect for babies' first time in the swimming pool.

For Step 2 and water exploration, try Swim Ways Swim Sweater, Swim Vest or the new Swim Shorty. The Swim Shorty looks like a wetsuit and is designed to provide style, safety and swim protection all in one. The comfort fit provides reassuring floatation for beginning swimmers and the fade-resistant fabric offers sun protection. The Step 3 Power Swimr is perfect for kids six to nine years old who know the basics of swimming but still need a little floatation assistance without interfering with their developing swimming skills. Finally, by Step 4 children are mastering swimming and need little assistance from Swim Ways arm swimmies and kickboards. Now matter what age or stage your little swimmer is at, Swim Ways has the perfect safety solution. swimways.com
