Splash, swim, snorkel and enjoy a carefree float in the refreshing 73 degree water of Blue Spring State Park. The first magnitude artesian spring is the largest on the St. Johns River. More than 65 million gallons of crystal clear water pours forth from the limestone bedrock offering snorkelers a good underwater view.
Relax and let the current of the spring run carry a tube or raft down the run from the boil where the water escapes from underground. There is an entry point off of the boardwalk leading to the spring boil. A gentle float trip carries visitors to the swim area approximately one-quarter of a mile downstream. Bring inflatable rafts or tubes from home or they may be purchased or rented at the park concession stand.
Snorkelers and swimmers may access the spring run from the same entry point and walk upstream to the spring boil. It can be challenging walking against the current and maneuvering around the submerged trees. Water shoes or some type of footwear will help protect feet from rocks or other sharp objects.
The spring boil offers snorkelers and scuba divers an interesting underwater adventure. Scuba divers must register at the park office between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. with a current certification card and a partner. At about 60' underground divers will see a sign warning them of the dangers of going any deeper into the cave, however the cave continues to a depth of 110' where it becomes too narrow to proceed farther.
About halfway down the spring run is a designated swimming area with a dock where visitors can take turns jumping into the water. For those who wish to enter more slowly there are steps into the water at each end of the dock. Snorkelers in this area may encounter garfish, some very long, and other freshwater species hiding among submerged trees or along the banks.
