Those who live in Santa Monica are blessed with a plethora of options for an active lifestyle. The city is constantly providing cheap and easy ways to stay fit and have fun.
My new favorite fitness spot is Santa Monica College, the home of the Santa Monica Swim Center and Santa Monica College track. Two amazing facilities, both cheap and open to the public.
The SMC track is large, brightly lit, well maintained and filled with the energy of the youthful students. It was originally built for use in the 1984 Olympics and is a perfect spot to work out alone or with a running group. It costs nothing but endurance.
Next door to the track is the Santa Monica Swim Center, a beautiful, modern facility with two large, heated outdoor pools. The smaller, Splash Pool, is shallow (2-4 ft. depths) with ten, 25-yard lanes and is used for recreational and lap swimming. The larger, Fitness Pool, is a 50 meter pool, split into 25-yard lanes.
The facilities are spacious, clean and well-maintained. There are lockers for your personal belongings and a large, pristine communal shower in both the men and women's locker rooms, with soap dispensers mounted on the wall for your convenience, lots of space for changing, and a large mirror which seperates the common area from the toilets.
Residents of Santa Monica pay a mere $1 for children and $2.50 for adults for a daily pass at The Santa Monica Swim Center. Need assistance, they offer swimming lessons all year round.
The track and swim center are both filled with electric energy and a true sense of community. Jump in to these beautiful and affordable reasons to run, swim, live.
