Another batch of beer has made it through SweetWater Brewing Company's (Atlanta, Georgia) Dank Tank, and craft beer lovers will be happy to hear that Johnny Hash Double IPA will start hitting shelves this week.
Johnny Hash, which might have been inspired a bit by the Man in Black, is an 8.5% ABV Double India Pale Ale made with hop hash from Citra hops. Hop hash is basically "a pure, concentrated form of hop resin scraped straight from the belly of Yakima Valley hop pelletizers." The brewers at SweetWater put the hash to work in the whirlpool and dry-hopping stages of this beer to dramatically develop its flavor and aroma. Since this was their first time utilizing this hop product, they decided to keep the malts pretty simple and light (two types of Pilsner malts, along with 2-Row and wheat) to allow the hop hash to shine. The end product is an intense and juicy citrus hop experience that is sure to satisfy the most devoted hopheads out there.
“Johnny Hash is a unique IPA for hop lovers,” said SweetWater Head Brewer Nick Nock. “Using hop hash was uncharted territory for us and we didn’t know exactly what we were going to get from it. We kept the grain bill pretty basic and used a limited amount of traditional hops, then beefed up the hop hash to a pound per barrel to really pack a punch and best allow its flavor to come through.”
Johnny Hash will start making appearances this week in 22 oz. bottles and on draft at select bars and retailers in areas you normally find Dank Tank offerings. Since it is a one-off brew from the Dank Tank, Johnny Hash will be available for a limited time only. Odds are this one will disappear pretty quickly, so make sure to grab your bottle whenever you see it. Happy hunting out there and enjoy. Prost!
