SweetWater Brewing Company, Georgia's biggest craft brewery, is known for its interesting and unique brews including Georgia Brown, IPA, Blue, LowRyeDer IPA, and of course, 420 Pale Ale. The SweetWater 420 Extra Pale Ale is by far their most popular. First brewed in 1997, is has a "stimulating hop character and a crisp finish." 420 has won awards including 2002 Silver Medal- Great American Beer Festival, 1997 – 2005 Creative Loafing Readers Choice – Best local beer, 1998 World Beer Cup silver medal, Top 10 Local beers – Atlanta Journal Constitution.
On Monday, March 10, SweetWater will launch its famous 420 Pale Ale in 12 ounce cans. 16-ounce tall boys are set to follow at some point in the near future. Why cans? From a freshness standpoint, aluminum cans keep beer fresher by sealing out oxygen and light that can destroy flavors. New technology in beer can manufacturing allows for a non-toxic liner, which keeps the beer from coming into contact with aluminum. Cans are also easier to transport than bottles, and more eco-friendly.
Atlantans are hoping to see some 420 Pale Ale in cans at Turner Field for baseball games this spring and summer. SweetWater beers are currently available at select locations in the Southeast. Make plans to attend the SweetWater 420 Fest, a three-day craft beer, music, food, and arts festival in Centennial Olympic Park, on, wait for it - April 20.
