Sweetland wins bronze in World Triathlon Series event

According to, Kristen Sweetland of Nanaimo, British Columbia won a bronze medal at a World Triathlon Series event in Hamburg, Germany. The medal performance was significant because it comes two years prior to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Sweetland posted a time of 57 minutes. She shared the same time as Australian silver medalist Emma Jackson. Both Sweetland and Jackson were six seconds slower than American gold medalist Gwen Jorgensen.

Jorgensen, who has now won four consecutive World Triathlon Series events, has 3885 total points. Sweetland is in sixth place with 1867 points. Meanwhile, there is a second Canadian woman in the top ten in the overall World Cup standings as Sarah-Anne Breault of Levis, Quebec is in seventh place with 1854 points. Breault's best finish this year was a fourth place finish in Auckland, New Zealand on April 6.

According to Chris Dornan, the media and public relations director of Triathlon Canada, Sweetland has had her share of injuries over the last six years that has limited her pontetial. On Saturday, Sweetland was the third fastest runner (16 minutes, four seconds), the eighth fastest in cycling (30 minutes, eight seconds), and the 19th fastest swimmer (nine minutes, 52 seconds). A two time World Cup champion, Sweetland also won the 2006 World Junior Triathlon Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Alistair Brownlee of Great Britain, the reigning Olympic champion in the men's triathlon from the 2012 Olympic Games in London, won the men's competition with a time of 51.43 minutes. He beat Vincent Luis of France by two seconds with his brother Jonathan Brownlee winning the bronze medal with a time of 51.48 minutes.

The next World Triathlon Series event will take place in Stockholm, Sweden on August 23, 2014. Edmonton meanwhile will be hosting the World Triathlon Grand Prix Final from August 29-September 1, 2014.
