November 2,2013- What a journey this has been for the St. Mark Sanctuary Choir. Tonight in Los Angeles, the choir won the 2013 How Sweet the Sound season following their captivating performance in the Dallas regional earlier this fall. Under the direction of Darius Nelson and Pastored by Pastor Phillip Pointer, the choir has gained notoriety for their 'flat foot' singing! You may recall the choir's stirring performance at the Dallas regional that got the judges on their feet and on stage as they reprised "Now" by Youthful Praise.
This choir is one of tremendous resolve, they have overcome obstacles on their way to this coronation and being dubbed "The Best Choir in America". Just last year, the church's pulpit was vacant. Filled by Pastor Pointer shortly before their entrance into the competition. This year, theirs is the story that almost didn't make it. The choir had major difficulty entering this year's regional competition. However before registration opened the church was dealt a striking blow!
Through many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come...
The church suffered an immeasurable loss with the highly publicized passing of Donna and Donald Creer. However even in tragedy Donna Creer; a staunch supporter of gospel music and the force single-handedly responsible for countless gospel music careers, lent the greatest support of her home church choir. The funeral service celebrating the lives of this awesome couple was streamed worldwide and viewed by millions.
It is by the Lord's amazing grace that the St. Mark Sanctuary Choir stands tall as winners in the 2013 How Sweet the Sound choir competition. What a triumphant run this has been for this great choir! They have overcome adversity each time it was presented. In a competition where choir directors with flamboyance and personality rule the day, this worship unit has found a way to break through and create a new standard! You will soon be able to hear more of this new standard on cd!
Since the 2012 competition, the Grand Prize winner is also awarded a recording contract on the e-One recording label. Last year's winner Dexter Walker and Zion Movement are still enjoying their success from their new release!
