We are entering into the sweetest month of the year. February is the “love” month. It is a time to shower someone special with love notes, flowers, candy, a special gift, and above all, a magical evening of love and romance. Saint Valentine’s Day or commonly known as just Valentine’s Day, is observed on February 14th each year. It is celebrated around the world and is considered a sacred day of traditionally expressing romantic love.
Saint Valentine’s Day began as a religious celebration of an early Christian saint named Valentinus. A popular account of Saint Valentine of Rome states that he performed weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and he ministered to Christians who were persecuted under the Roman Empire. When he was caught going against Roman law, he was thrown into prison. According to legend, during his imprisonment, he healed the daughter of his jailer, Asterius. Roman law stated that Valentine must be executed for his crimes against the state. The story continues by stating that just before Valentine was executed, he wrote a farewell letter to the daughter of his jailer, signing “Your Valentine”.
The day was first associated with romantic love in the high Middle Ages when the tradition of courtly love flourished. In England in the 18th century, lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering sweets, and sending greeting cards, known as “Valentines”. Symbols such as doves, angels, winged cupids, and hearts became popular as people created hand-made cards. Since the 19th century, mass produced Valentine’s cards have become extremely popular.
So what makes Valentine’s Day so special? Hearts are touched by special gestures showing love, heart-felt gifts and words of love emphasize a couples’ commitment to one another. It is a time to write out in a poem or a letter or even a small note recounting why that special someone is so important. Children send unique Valentine’s notes to one another. It is a wonderful time to make others’ smile.
A Valentine is most special when time is spent making it distinctive. It’s nice to express love with a hand written note. A hand made Valentine’s card is a sure sign of affection. A planned picnic in the park, a long walk on the beach, a bike ride on the bike path and even a sweet romantic movie are simple yet sweet ways to say “I care”. A treasure hunt with “sweet” clues, culminating with a trip to a special chocolate or candy shop is simple yet thoughtful. A photo book of you with your special someone, along with little notes attached to each photo is a great way to make memories. A special lunch with your sweetheart may be perfect while your children are in school. A bunch of heart balloons tied to his or her office chair or one special rose tied with a small love note, left on his or her bed pillow, may mark the beginning of a special night. There are plenty of apps for your phone that will help you make your Valentine's Day special!
What ever you plan, never forget that Valentine’s Day is special to anyone you care for. Have fun and say I love you!
