It hasn’t been often that I’ve found the gluten-free version of something to taste better than its more widely-eaten, glutinous counterpart. But Glutino’s new gluten-free toaster pastries, available at Whole Foods stores, are indeed tastier than Pop Tarts or Toaster Strudels.
Granted, I haven’t had a Pop Tart or Toaster Strudels in years—those breakfast goodies are off-limits to anyone who is gluten-intolerant and follows a gluten-free diet. But Glutino’s latest breakfast offering makes it so that I don’t have to miss the breakfast treats of my youth.
Glutino’s toaster pastries are seriously delicious. They come in two flavors—Apple Cinnamon and Strawberry. Each is flavorful and fruity, sweet with a little bit of tartness to it. They actually taste like I’m eating something that was made with real fruit, not a bunch of processed junk. In addition to being a fan of the stuff these pastries are filled with, I also love the dough that these are made from. They’re much tastier than the bland crust of Pop Tarts; the dough is more similar to that of a Toaster Strudel, but these are a little less flaky (and seem to hold together better than Toaster Strudels do).
These toaster pastries are easy to cook. Just pop one in your toaster on low heat, and in a minute or two you’ve got instant deliciousness. They cook up nicely and taste yummy warmed up, but they also don’t taste too bad if you eat ‘em cold, right out of the wrapper. Another nice thing about them is that they come individually wrapped, so you can easily take one with you on the go. (Helpful hint: If you bring them on the go, you may want to just eat them cold. To avoid cross-contamination, beware of communal toasters in the office kitchen--don’t toast them in any toaster that has also toasted glutinous products!)
Glutino’s toaster pastries are surprisingly filling and satisfying. Unlike many other breakfast treats, this doesn’t leave me hungering for more an hour or two after I’ve eaten it. For a yummy, gluten-free, easy to make breakfast treat, I haven’t found a better option than Glutino’s toaster pastries.
The downsides of these toaster pastries? For anyone accustomed to their breakfast treat being topped with icing, these little pastries are icing-free. (Trust me, even if you’re an icing fiend, try these anyway—I dare you to be disappointed.) And, unlike their wheat-containing counterparts, there are only 5 Glutino toaster pastries per box—this is less than a typical box of Pop Tarts, which contains 8 tarts, but the upside is that 5 is still enough for an entire week’s worth of breakfast.
For a fruity, scrumptious breakfast treat, pick up Glutino's gluten-free toaster pastries at your local Whole Foods market for $4.99 per box.
