Sweet Onion Animal Protection Society (SOAPS) has been around for almost 30 years, and is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization. They saw a great need in their community to help the animals of various shelters. They provide their services to help the dogs and cats of Vidalia Animal Control, The Hazlehurst Animal Shelter and the Lyons County Animal Control. They have various programs set up and they are as follows:
- The SOAPS Foster Babies program - they utilize their own foster homes for some of the fur-babies that they come to know. Their adoption fees are $65 for dogs and $50 for cats. These pets are socialized within a loving home and their adoption fee includes all vetting, shots and spay/neuter of the animal.
- Vidalia Animal Control – Adoption fees are $45 and a $100 spay/neuter voucher will be provided by SOAPS to help cover the cost. They are open M-F 8am-5pm and Saturday 10am-2pm.
- The Hazlehurst Animal Shelter and Adoption Center – Their adoption fees are $65 for a dog and it covers the cost of a rabies shot and the spay/neuter of the dog. This facility is volunteer ran therefore viewing and adoptions are by appointment only.
- The Lyons County Animal Control – There is no adoption fee from this facility and SOAPS will provide a $100 spay/neuter voucher that will help to cover the cost. This facility requires an appointment to view or adopt a dog.
SOAPS not only helps with finding dogs and cats new fur-ever homes in the Toombs County areas, they also promote animal welfare through education as well as provide community awareness to pet health and safety issues. They offer many programs to help in this process.
- Adoption Days – SOAPS joins with the Vidalia Animal Control two times a year for special adoption weekends. In May they team up with the North Shore Animal League and in December they team up with the Helen Woodward Animal Center for the HOME 4 the Holidays event. At these two special adoption events SOAPS provides special assistance to families looking to adopt a fur-baby by paying a portion of the $45 adoption fee. They also provide a $100 spay/neuter voucher at the time of the adoption.
- Youth Education – SOAPS provides a monthly newsletter to the 2ndGraders at J.D. Dickerson and the 6thGraders at Robert Toombs. This newsletter helps teach the fundamentals to animal care through games, facts, articles and fun activities.
- Reduced spay/neuter program – If you have adopted a pet by other means and you need financial help with getting the pet spayed or neutered then you can seek financial aid from them. If approved, the pet owner must pay a co-payment to SOAPS for the $100 voucher and it is good at participating veterinarians.
- Palaces for Pets – A program where you have an outside dog and it is requited by law that any outside dog must have a sufficient shelter. This program helps pet owners by applying for assistance to get a dog house for their dog.
- And others....
There are many things going on in the SOAPS community and it is all for the common goal of saving the lives of animals, educating the public to the needs of the animals and providing the care to the animals. All of this is possible through the generous tax deductible donations that are provided by people trying to do their part in helping animals. If interested in knowing more please visit their website.
