Civil rights news alert: Aaron Klein, the owner of Sweet Cakes by Melissa, is evidently enjoying the attention he is getting after he refused to sell a wedding cake to a same sex couple. At least that's what it looks like if you look at the screenshots that a protest group is sharing online. The Boycott Sweet Cakes by Melissa Facebook page shared a handful of images depicting Aaron Klein in various conversations with people using his Facebook account. It appears that the latest public comments made by the shop owner were on March 15, 2013.
"Maybe instead of changing our country people who don't like the constitution of the United States of America can leave," said Aaron Klein regarding laws against homosexual discrimination.
Aside from this comment (among others) being insulting, Aaron seems to be confused about what the U.S. Constitution grants Americans, and even more confused about the fact that he is still in direct violation of Oregon state law. Aaron Klein can also be seen in the series of screenshots discussing the owner of Arlene's Flowers out of Washington state -- who is also in the news for discriminating (illegally) against homosexual couples. According to Aaron Klein business owners like himself and the florist have the right to discriminate against who they please, and his examples are nothing short of "derptastic." He equates the florist selling flowers for a homosexual wedding to her being "forced to take part in a ceremony she doesn't believe in."
Good grief.
By Aaron Klein's logic, simply selling someone an item somehow makes you directly involved in the use of said item. That is like saying Budweiser is directly involved in each and every single sweaty drunken bar fight in middle America, or like saying baby formula brand Enfamil is directly involved in the manufacturing of meth simply because one or two people might purchase it for that use. In other words, that's not logic at all. That is not reasoning. It makes no sense. And it's a piss-poor excuse to continue disparaging human beings who are deserving of the same rights as every other American.
Neither Aaron Klein or the owner of Arlene's Flowers are being forced to participate in any of these weddings, nor is it even likely that they'd be invited as guests. Simply selling someone a cake or a couple of bouquet arrangements does not somehow put these business owners into the lives, functions, homes and memories of these families So why on earth do Aaron Klein and Barronelle Stuzman insist on behaving as though it does?
If history is any indicator of what the future brings, then it's safe to say that these clowns' 15 minutes of "fame" will be up soon, and in place of the online attention being basked and soaked in by these discrimination-supporting businesses there will likely be fines and other forms of punishment if the behavior continues. In the meantime, there are many eyes in the sky and Aaron Klein's every word is stacking one on top of the other, building the massive case against him when it comes time for the investigation against his business to turn into a disciplinary hearing.
