Atheism News: The 'Sweet Cakes by Melissa' saga is far from over, with the latest update proving that their actions have quite the ripple effect. As of Feb. 6, 2013 a totally innocent person has been targeted by vitriol and hatred all because her cake shop name bears a similar name to that of the bigoted shop in Oregon, and the shop being wrongfully attacked is in California! Huffington Post, San Gabriel Valley Tribune and various other sources have revealed these details, and the 'Sweet Melissa Cakes' Facebook page is full of interesting activity!
It also seems that another Examiner.Com post I wrote is partially to blame for the attacks this woman has been getting. For that, apologies are necessary, however it should be noted that it has always been very clear that 'Sweet Cakes by Melissa' out of Gresham, Ore. is the business that reportedly discriminates against homosexuals in the name of Christianity. Aaron Klein, the owner of the shop, also appears to have anti-liberal sentiments according to this post.
Anyway, I once again tried to reach out to the owners of 'Sweet Cakes by Melissa' regarding the screenshots depicting Aaron Klein using racial slurs and homophobic statements as well as anti-Obama comments regarding socialism. Once again, they were unable to respond to either confirm or deny the screenshots and allegations against them. On the other hand, they appear to be using a personal Facebook page as their business's page, which is a violation of Facebook TOS -- after deleting the original 'Sweet Cakes by Melissa' fan page.
Unfortunately the owner of 'Sweet Melissa Cakes' became the undeserving target of people online who sent messages to her Facebook community page telling her that she should be ashamed of herself. She's also been getting threats and horrible insults via Facebook. However, Ellen DeGeneres came out in support for the woman and posted this public statement to tell the public that she is not the cake shop owner in Oregon who refused to sell a wedding cake to a lesbian couple. The statement says:
"Sweet Melisa Cakes in Covina, California is owned by a wonderful woman who has been on our show and is NOT the bakery in question!"
Atheists and other Christians are actually in agreement on this, as well as liberals and some conservative people. Overwhelmingly, the owners of 'Sweet cakes by Melissa' are in violation of Oregon state law, and may even be in violation of federal civil rights related laws -- the same laws that prohibit businesses from being "whites only" and the sort. Aaron Klein's horrible statements about minorities and his treatment of homosexuals in his area has caused a ripple effect that attracted the attention of more than just the LGBTQ community. And that goes to show that many groups are against such blatant discrimination.
