Flutie is a beautiful 14-year-old cat who was given as a birthday present from a husband to his wife. Now he needs our help to find a new forever home, as this military family is deploying the second week in October and he did not do well with their last overseas relocation nine years ago. The family will not subject him to another overseas relocation.
This message from Flutie's owner was posted September 12 on the Whiskers Animal Rescue Facebook page from his owner Jodi.
"I am writing to give you a little background on our cat "Flutie"and to see if perhaps you may know someone who would take good care of him since we cannot take him overseas with us in the coming months when we PCS to England.
My husband got him for me as a birthday present when we first got married almost 14 years ago. We named him "Flutie" after Doug Flutie a former NFL quarter back we used to like to watch. Since then Flutie has gone everywhere with us. He traveled from where we were first stationed in New Jersey, all the way to Japan, and then from Japan to Summerville.
Flutie has also survived four children tugging and grabbing him over the years. He's been a sweet cat to us and has never hurt one of the kids. He's never bit them and just warns them from time to time with a paw. He has a gentle and patient temperament. Although he doesn't want to be held and carried around by the kids he still comes around to lay with them and be petted . He sits on their laps if they sit still long enough.
When we flew from Japan to South Carolina 9 years ago the flight made him very sick and stressed. He clawed and clawed to get out of the carrier until his paws were covered in blood and no nails were left. He hid under the bed for a week and barely ate after that. It took a long time for him to recover from that trip. At that time he was about 5 years old.
Now 9 years have gone by and he's just a sweet old cat that we know would not survive the flight much less the 6 month quarantine that the U.K. requires animals coming into their country. If we could take him and know that he wouldn't suffer then we would do it because we do enjoy his company and will miss him. But, it's not in his best interest and we would much prefer for his sake that he spend his remaining years peaceful and content.
It would be selfish for us to put him through such an ordeal simply because we did not want to let him go.
His health is good but his teeth are showing his age. We will be getting his shots up to date soon. He is not de-clawed. Uses his litter box fine. No problems with accidents or anything like that. He has always been an indoor cat but would likely adapt to a mix of in and out if need be."
Please share this article with friends in the Summerville, SC area. This community is close to Charleston, SC. It takes a special person to put a cats comfort and safety above even the love felt for that cat. Flutie is like a child to them, and they want to see her safe and happy before they leave.
