Swedish royals gather to attend Nobel ceremony, Luxembourg royals look on

HM King Carl XVI Gustaf was in the global spotlight Saturday as he handed out Nobel prizes in medicine, literature, economics, physics, and chemistry.  On hand in Stockholm along with HM the King were HM Queen Silvia, a very pregnant Crown Princess Victoria and her husband Prince Daniel, and Prince Carl PhilipHRH Princess Madeleine did not attend due to responsibilities in the New York.  Luxembourg-born Jules Hoffmann shared half of the Medicine Prize, which this year honored research on the immune system, there to support him were Luxembourg’s Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa.  The clothing worn by the Swedish royals is always part of the fun of the event.  Queen Silva wore the same gown she wore to the pre-wedding festivities of her daughter’s wedding in June 2010. The Crown Princess wore a deep blue sequined dress showed all six months of her pregnancy.  The Nobel Prize consists of a gold medal, a diploma, and a cash prize of $1.48 million dollars, to be shared if there is more than one recipient.  After the ceremony, the laureates were honored at a formal dinner banquet attended by the royal family and some 1,400 specially-invited guests.  The menu consisted primarily of lobster with pickled winter vegetables and Jerusalem artichoke purée.  Dessert was a white chocolate mousse on a cinnamon-spiced cake with raspberry marmalade and fresh raspberries.  The Nobel Peace Prize is handed out the same day in Oslo, in the presence of the Norwegian royal family
