Svengoolie introduces us to the ‘Son of Frankenstein’ on April 12th

This week Svengoolie brings us another story about the Frankenstein family with the 1939 Universal Pictures film “Son of Frankenstein.” The film stars Boris Karloff as the monster, Bela Lugosi as Ygor, and Basil Rathbone as Baron Wolf von Frankenstein. Rowland V. Lee directed the film with a script by Wyllis Cooper.

The story happens a few years after the events of the last movie as Wolf Frankenstein returns to the ancestral castle with his family. His dream of redeeming the Frankenstein family name seems possible once he finds the body of the monster in the crypt at the castle. With the help of Ygor, whom he meets while exploring the castle, he brings the monster back to life. With this success, he is hoping to prove that his father was not a lunatic thus bringing honor to the family again. However, it is soon obvious that Ygor is actually in control of the monster and is using him to seek revenge on the townspeople that tried and unsuccessfully hung Ygor for grave robbing. Wolf and Krogh, the local constable, attempt to stop Ygor inadvertently putting the Frankenstein family in danger. Tune in to Svengoolie Saturday night to see if family Frankenstein triumphs or if the monster finally wins the day.

A bit of extra trivia, Karloff portrayed the monster in two other Universal Pictures films, “Frankenstein” and “Bride of Frankenstein. This film marks his last time in the monster’s makeup.
