Svadhisthana Chakra: the "sacral" chakra

The second chakra is the Svadhisthana chakra, also known as the sacral or pelvic chakra. It is located in the lower abdominal muscles, near the sexual organs, about 2 inches below the navel and 2 inches deep inside the body. It allows us our ability to connect and accept others along with new situations and experiences. Physically it is associated with urination, menstruation, orgasm (and sexuality in general) and tears. Emotionally, it can represent creativity, pleasure, and well-being. If this chakra is out of balance, it can lead to anger, frustration, guilt, sexual addiction or deviance.

Some of the other characteristics associated with this chakra:

  • Color: Orange
  • Element: Water
  • Mantra: Vam
  • Petals on the lotus flower: 6
  • God: Vishnu
  • Goddess: Rakini

Yoga asana that can help keep this chakra in balance are poses that open the hips and relax the body, allowing it to become more open and receptive. Poses like low lunges, gomukhasana (cow face pose), half pigeon, baddha konasona (cobbler's pose) and upavishta konasona (wide legged forward fold) can help the hips and the pelvic region of the body open.
