Suzanne Collins talks about writing 'The Hunger Games' screenplay

It's a frustrating time these days for fans of The Hunger Games series, who are anxiously awaiting any news about the upcoming film adaptation of the first book in the trilogy.

It's all but official that Pleasantville director Gary Ross will direct the movie adaptation. And we know producers are hoping for a 2012 release, with production likely beginning in early 2011. But Lionsgate has said little about the production, especially the status of casting.

But there's another issue that has fans waiting on pins and needles, and that is how the book will translate to the big screen.

Luckily, author Suzanne Collins wrote the first draft of the screenplay herself -- setting the stage for her powerful and incredibly popular story to make the leap to film.

In a recent interview, Collins told Entertainment Weekly that Lionsgate has “established a dialogue with me, making me feel my input was valuable and welcome.”

“Obviously, you have to let things go,” she also told EW, “but it’s more than a question of condensation. You want to preserve the essence while making the film stand on its own. It’s an art in itself.”

So it sounds like Collins is feeling good about the adaptation so-far, and it's always a good sign when the author is pleased.
