Backes scored the eventual game-winner by beating Ondrej Pavelec on a sharp-angle shot off a shot by Suter that carom

Zach Parise capped Suter’s assist run by beating the Czech defender to a rebound off the end boards and knocking the loose puck under Pavelec’s pad. That goal ended Pavelec’s night. He stopped eight of 12 shots.

James van Riemsdyk, Dustin Brown and Phil Kessel also scored for the USA.

Ales Hemsky scored both Czech goals, one that came from his stick and one with help from the USA defensemen. His first goal came early in the first period to tie the game at 1-1.
