As Spring approaches in Eastern Washington, the Buddhist Nuns and Monks are preparing for a active season of forest management. Sravasti Abbey sits on 240 acres of beautiful meadow and forested land near Newport, Washington. It is about one hour north of Spokane, Washington, and Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
Venerable Thubten Chodrun, the founder and Abbess of Sravasti, and the rest of the monastic community are committed to maintaining a healthy and sustainable forest environment. Assisted by forestry experts from WSU and local volunteers, the management of the forest lands is an active component of the life of the Abbey.
What is 'sustainable forestry'?
It has these goals at Sravasti:
- Maintaining and encouraging plant and animal diversity
- Mitigating forest crowding and congestion
- Removal of slash and forest debris for fire prevention
- Providing fire wood for needy families in the area
The on-going thinning and slash clean up project is underway. Please visit the Abbey's Website for volunteer and learning opportunities.
