Sustainable dining downtown SF with style: Urban Tavern

After a long working day and as part of our SF dining series, we decided to pay a visit to Urban Tavern and examine them.

Located downtwon San Francisco Union Square, Urban Tavern is drawing a lot of attention these days. The casual yet stylish décor with intimate booths that greeted us was comforting. The full sized horse sculpture named Urban and made by Arizona artist Doug Owen is a focal element. The Urban design by Donna Scala is entirely sustainable and even includes reclaimed wood structural beams.

Maestro Colin Duggan leads the kitchen. Using his creativity to the max he has orchestrated a menu to rave about.  The food is contemporary American cuisine and includes fresh and seasonal organic ingredients. We were thrilled to learn that 80% of which are sourced from farmers located in the Bay Area. The same exends to the beer and wine list which is overseen by Anthony Santiago. The water served at the table is filtered in-house. This by itself saves hundreds of plastic bottles and carbon print.

While sipping  a refreshing Lychee Martini we perused the menu in search of the right selections.

Our host for the night, Dhong magically produced a 2009 Obsidian Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon, the full bodied wine excited our appetite and we welcomed the string of culinary treats.

Our dining experience included the chopped Farmers Market vegetable salad, warm and savory baked oysters O'farell, Urban Tavern’s scrumptious Tavern Steak and Fries served in a hot clay pot and a mouth-watering sole meuniere. The food was a feast for our senses. The grand finale was a surprise from the chef and consisted in a creamy apple cobbler which should we say was simply succulicious. (succulent and delicious)

The wine list at Urban Tavern is extensive and will satisfy any wine connoisseur.

To top it off, Urban Tavern’s five hours of free parking while dining remains an Urban Tavern hallmark and is the perfect complement to a great meal for guests who may also be going to the theater or shopping in the Union Square area.

Prices are reasonable. This is the place for locals to meet and enjoy a delightful culinary experience with friends.

Urban Tavern is located at 333 O’Farrell Street, near Mason Street, in downtown San Francisco, California.
The restaurant is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The San Francisco Green Living Examiner's note: The staff is very professional. Duggan and Santiago with their team will make your first visit a great Urban experience.

We left content with our new sustainable and green discovery, wishing that one day their sustainble dining concept will be the norm. Urban Tavern leads by example and we hope you will give it your support.
