Sustainable clothing

The manufacturing of clothing can be just as sustainable or unsustainable as the manufacturing of food, cleaning products, beauty products, furniture, or anything else. In order for it to be sustainable, the clothing has to be made out of products that can regrow and replenish. This means that, just as (so I'm told) a proper vegan shouldn’t own leather, a proper believer in sustainability should not wear clothing made with petroleum products, better known in the clothing world as: synthetic materials. These synthetic materials include: Polyester, acrylic, nylon, rayon, acetate, spandex, latex and Kevlar. There are also some clever ways of sneaking petroleum plastics into your wardrobe, like the stretchy part of your socks and underwear, stretchy jeans, prints on shirts, finishings on clothing, and of course there’s also shoes and jewelry. Really, most anything that’s very stretchy, waterproof or fireproof you can guarantee is made from a synthetic fabric.
Perhaps an acceptable use of the world's rapidly diminishing oil reserves is towards the continued production of firemen’s gear. This means, however, that the rest of the population must learn what other option are available to them that came from materials that can be (and hopefully are) sustainably raised and preferably local.
A good place to start would be to invest in clothing made with natural fibers such as cotton, kapuk, wool, kanef, bamboo, hemp, flax, viscose, and modal. Although leather is natural, typically it’s treated with a great deal of chemicals to transform it from an animal skin to something occasionally waterproof that doesn't rot. While you’re at it, I’d suggest also looking at the label to see where the clothing is made. The closer to America it’s made, the less that article of clothing had to travel.
