The Sustainable Business Council covered B Corporations during their community event at the Lexus Santa Monica showroom this week.
Attending the panel covering B Corporations, their benefits and the process, were nearly 200 business professionals who enjoyed vegetarian fare catered by the California Pizza Kitchen with drinks offered via Zhena's Gypsy Tea, Om Organic Mixology, Madria Sangria and Mountain Valley Spring Water and sweet treats from Om Snacks. Before the evening’s panel discussion, attendees mingled in the sustainable business showcase area viewing sustainable goods, products and services from New Leaf Paper, LivingHomes, shiftalliance, B Revolution, Zhena's Gypsy Tea and the California Business Alliance for a Green Economy.
Moderated by Sustainable Law Group P.C.’s Cecily Jackson-Zapata, the B Corporation panel of experts included Patagonia’s Director of Surf Jason McCaffrey, New Leaf Paper Founder and Chair Jeff Mendelsohn, B Lab’s Head of Community Development Dermot Hikisch and B Revolution, Inc.’s CEO Dirk R. Sampselle.
According to New Leaf Paper’s Jeff Mendelsohn, B Corporations are the ultimate in corporate business transparency.
“With purpose driven products, becoming a B Corporation is a strategic tool for optimizing your business,” Mendelsohn said, “while bringing all the elements of your value chain closer together.”
Patagonia’s Jason McCaffrey believes being a B Corporation is key to their ongoing success.
“As a result of becoming a B Corp, Patagonia became even more innovative just to keep up with our own business model,” McCaffrey said. “Even accountability to the making of decisions can be part of a B Corp’s by laws. A B Corp just keeps raising its own bar.”
The "Tools and Tips on B Corps" event, presented by Marcum LLP, was additionally supported by Earth Friendly Products, LAcarGUY, New Leaf Paper, Sustainable Law Group, LivingHomes, California Pizza Kitchen, Evenson Design Group, Summa Marketing and Communications, Green Business Networking, California Business Alliance for a Green Economy, Women in Green Forum, shiftalliance, Om Organic Mixology, Madria Sangria, generate possibility, Om Snacks, B Revolution, Inc., Zhena's Gypsy Tea, Mountain Valley Spring Water and Mentor InSight.
