The Hill reports Thursday afternoon that the district office of Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) was evacuated after a suspicious package was reported.
“There was some kind of incident that occurred,” Issa spokesman Frederick Hill said.
The Hill adds:
Hill declined to offer specifics on the nature of the incident until more information became available, but did say that the local authorities were contacted Thursday afternoon and evacuated Issa’s district office in Vista, Calif., while they investigated the matter.
“We take very seriously the safety of our employees,” Hill added.
San Diego's 10news.com reported that authorities were called to the office located at 1800 Thibodo Road shortly before 1:30 p.m. Thursday.
According to Signonsandiego.com, the bomb squad was called out, and it was not immediately known if the Congresman was in the office at the time.
This is a breaking story - updates will be added as they become available.
Update: (3:15 pm) Signonsandiego reports:
MoveOn.org, a nationwide activist organization, and members of the Occupy Wall Street movement staged a rally there about noon, an Issa office staff member said. Someone later reported seeing a suspicious device at the building.
The Congressman was not at his district office, but was in Washington, D.C.
“Representative Issa in 2001 was the target of a bombing plot that was interrupted by the FBI,” Hill said, adding he is trying to ascertain all the facts.
Update: (3:35 pm) NBC San Diego has a live feed here.
Update: (5:23 pm) News10 reported that members of Moveon.org said they were unaware of any discovery and denied responsibility while saying that supporters of the Tea Party and Minutemen were also present.
Signonsandiego reported:
Some 20 demonstrators arrived at the office about noon and were told to remain outside. The group then gathered at the sidewalk next to the building.
About eight counter-protesters, some from the SoCal Patriot Coalition, arrived to observe the demonstration and “keep the peace,” as one participant put it.
At 7:43 EST, the Daily Caller reported that the "scene was cleared and the report was 'unfounded'" according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department.
