Suspects find ‘no exit’ in botched NYC deli robbery

Here is something for two would-be New York City robbers to ponder as they await their day in court to answer to charges of criminal assault with a deadly weapon and armed robbery. If you’re going to stick up a neighborhood deli --- as they did --- first be sure that no one is watching. Second, take care case out the establishment and plan an escape route.

It is obvious that 20-year-old Isaiah Henderson and 23-year-old James Gillespie failed to account for either exigency in their botched robbery on Friday of a deli in the Bedford Stuyvesant section of the city. Consider:

• Their every move, including their wholly unnecessary pistol whipping of clerk Said Jafaar, was captured on a surveillance camera.
• In their efforts to avoid apprehension once the police showed up, the pair kicked down a locked door at the rear of the store, only to discover it opened onto a restroom.

CBS New York reports that Henderson and Gillespie were full of bravado when they first entered the bodega. Despite Jafaar’s compliance with their request to hand over his wallet and the contents of the cash drawer, they delivered a severe beating to his head and legs.

Their behavior changed dramatically four minutes into the attack, when police arrived in the doorway. The two assailants began to panic, tossing items that included their victim’s wallet and cell phone. When they realized they were trapped, they thrust their hands up and were subdued.
