Northumberland County, PA: On January 7th, a woman found a little 12-week-old Pit Bull puppy near the Springfield Cemetery. The puppy was critically injured and it appeared she had been thrown from a 50-foot hill.
The woman who found the puppy contacted the owner of Mostly Mutts, Cheryl Hill, who knew immediately that the puppy needed urgent medical care. She took Harper to Sunbury Animal Hospital, where she was found to have a severe brain injury; unable to move at all with her legs completely stiff. (Source.)
Two suspects, both residents of Shamokin, 20-year-old Michael Wolfe and 19-year-old Angelina Coladonato have been charged in connection with this horrible act of cruelty. Wolfe has been charged with cruelty to animals and lying to authorities, while Coladonato has been charged with lying to authorities. (Source.)
Allegedly the suspects initially lied to authorities, telling them the puppy had been ill and they had given her away to a friend. It now appears that someone wrapped her in a towel and threw her down the 50-foot embankment. Vets don't know if the brain injury was caused by the fall alone, or from bouncing all the way down the embankment. When found, her legs were completely stiff and she was unable to move.
Now named Harper, the puppy has been recovering at the Sunbury Animal Hospital. When first found, vets weren't sure little Harper would even survive because the extent of her brain trauma was so severe.
However, the latest update on Harper is encouraging, with news that her pain medications have been reduced and the swelling in her brain is starting to lessen. She's eating and drinking and has been trying to sit up on her own.
Advocates from around the world have been horrified by the story of little Harper. There has been an outpouring of support for her, with the cheerleaders from Shamokin Area High School holding a bake sale with all of the proceeds going to the medical care for Harper. Advocates from other cities as far away as California were holding fundraising events to help with the cost of the extensive medical care for this precious little girl.
The manner in which Harper was just thrown from the cliff is heartbreaking. It's hard to even look at the pictures of her struggling to move. But clearly she has a determined little spirit and a will to live. She has a long way to go in her recovery, however.
Mostly Mutts is accepting donations for the medical expenses for little Harper. The doctors have estimated the cost will be approximately $2000 at least. If you'd like to donate to Harper's care, you can do so at the link provided below.
Stay strong and heal little Harper. Advocates everywhere are pulling for you and hope the heartless monsters who hurt you will get the justice they deserve.
