New York State Police are investigating a possible puppy mill on Route 5S in Fort Plain. Multiple police agencies were on the scene Wednesday night at the barn between Sanders Road and Airport Road in Fort Plain where neighbors say dozens of dogs were living.
Some of the puppies and dogs were kept in rusty the rundown barn, others were chained to dog houses on the property. An entity calling itself "Sickpuppyz pitbull kennels" had a facebook page where they posted photos of dogs. They seemed to brag about the way they treated the dogs, many of whome seemed fearful.
Visitors to the page saw dogs kept in filth and whelping chained. Many were applaled at the dogs being kept in such poor conditions,. Sickpuppyz pitbull kennels page administrators scoffed at and taunted those who complained online about the conditions there. They even told some they were a "Pit bull rescue".
Animal lovers and advocates from as far away as Kansas City had seen the page and complained about it. They were elated to see that state police has descended on the property Wednesday afternoon.
"A friend of mine just told me that he heard a bunch of pitbulls barking every night so they called the cops like every night or every other night and I guess they just got busted with like 10 to 15 dogs that were being mistreated," said Justin Wallis of nearby Nelliston who's friend lives next door to the barn. "Four or five puppies that were out back in a kennel, a Doberman, and a few more pitbulls inside." Neighbor’s told WKTV News in Utica that they thought it was a pit-bull breeding facility.
Concerned community members had been sent to police and local news media. It was thought that as many 50 dogs were living inside the barn with many more outside.
