A suspect has been detained in a flag burning incident at St. James High School in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, Monday, September 9, 2013. The suspect was seen on a security camera wearing black clothing, goggles and carrying a bag.
There had been several previous episodes of flag burning at homes in the Indigo Creek subdivision in Murrells Inlet which led the Horry County Police Department to the suspect in a house in that area.
At the opening of the school day it was found that several United States flags had been burned at various doors of the school building. It was also determined that the flags were not property of the high school. Students were at first evacuated to the football field and later taken to a nearby middle school where parents were advised how they could pick up their children.
The Horry County Police Department's Bomb Squad was brought onto the property of St. James High School in order to clear the building of any potential harmful weapons. The bomb squad had the building on all clear status around 11 a.m.
