Moira Queen (Susanna Thompson) stood in front of camera crews, her family, her business partners, her co-conspirators, and Starling City in general at the end of the first season of The CW's Arrow and admitted to her part in a devastating plan. While that could have painted a target directly over her heart, instead in an odd way it probably saved her because she was taken into police and therefore protective custody while the city around her literally came crumbling down. But her actions certainly still sent shock waves through her family and have crashed her personal world in much more intimate ways.
"She's pretty much by herself. I mean, she was devastated by the end of last season, and this season she starts very isolated, prison being this symbolic moment of all of it. Her daughter is resisting seeing her; her son is dealing with the ramifications of her best friend's death; so she's pretty much alone, and that's where she starts," Thompson said of Moira's second season journey when LA TV Insider Examiner sat down with her on set in Vancouver*.
Thompson believes that "in many many ways, Moira and Oliver live parallel lives," and that is especially apparent in both the way they lost themselves over the years, as well as the newer sense of isolation that they both start with this season. But in Oliver's (Stephen Amell) case, he has friends who pull him out of it, while Moira is relying a bit on her family to do that for her.
"I think it really started toward the end [of season one], with her and Oliver. She really started mustering up her own soul again. I think she lost it so much with Malcolm, and I think Oliver really helped her uncover it again. The writers have chatted about redemption this season, and we'll see where that road to redemption leads...but I will say they've always been really excited to surprise audiences with Moira. There's something very mysterious about her, even to me. So I walk down a path with her, and then they take a right turn!" Thompson said.
Arrow airs on The CW on Wednesday nights at 8 p.m.
