December 30, 2009 - The 72-hour “Susan Powell Social Media Blitz” campaign is scheduled to begin Mon. Jan. 4 at 8 a.m. MST and will end Thur. Jan. 7 at 9 a.m. MST. It will coincide with the "Susan Powell Purple Ribbon Campaign".
The “Social Media Blitz” has been organized by Friends and Family of Susan Powell. It is aimed at getting the word out about Susan’s disappearance via the Internet – something Ed Smart, father of Elizabeth Smart who was missing and found nine months later, says is an important tool in keeping the case alive and can be used to spread information about Susan.
In an interview with Shelby Gifford, Spokeswoman for Susan Powell’s family, she said, “This is an opportunity for us to use technology that’s available to us. We are putting together a video that is almost finished. We want the video showing pictures of Susan and all her information in every corner of the world - we want it to go viral – and we can do that via social networking!”
“Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, blogging, Blip podcasting, MySpace, e-mail – whatever Internet tool is available should be used. We are asking everyone to send the video via e-mail to at least five of their close friends or family. No spamming, nothing like that. We want people to send it to people they know and to ask those people to send it to others they know, and so on,” she said.
“Something to remember,” Gifford said, “When reaching out to this many people all at once it really only takes one person who remembers something they saw, something strange that has stuck in their memory that now clicks and makes sense.”
Friends and Family of Susan Powell have taken criticism for using social networking sites, Gifford said. “We’ve been ridiculed for not being out there, looking in dumpsters, out hiking through the freezing dessert. We believe this is more productive. We’re using the Internet as a tool to spread the message about Susan to as many people as we can.”
She went on to say that “The Friends and Family of Susan Powell” Facebook site, as of tonight, has over 11,400 members. That’s impressive. “We’ve got over 11,000 people who are members and more than that I’m sure have seen the site. Can we knock on 11,000+ doors? Probably not. And that’s not to mention all the people who have seen Susan on sites like Twitter, YouTube, MySpace, and others,” Gifford said.
Family and Friends of Susan Powell are looking for help in this campaign. If you are able to help please e-mail them at findsusanpowell@gmail.com. You will then receive an e-mail this weekend with instructions about what to do on Monday morning. "We need every single person's help," said Kiirsi Hellewell, Susan's best friend.
