Chesterfield resident Susan Lamson recalls a story told by her mother about her start in art.
Lamson’s mother says that as a toddler she tried to draw a piano.
After growing up in Richmond riding her bicycle to Virginia Commonwealth University campus and attending Richmond public schools during integration, Lamson went on to major in 3-dimensional art at VCU.
“I didn’t really even look at any other schools,” said Lamson, whose new work “Chasing the Light” opened Labor Day weekend at Visual Art Studio.
“Most of my work up until this time was more about architecture and the places I’d seen,” said Lamson about the show’s title. “This show has been much more personal to myself.” Each photograph is reworked with print and paint resulting in a mixed media piece of art.
Pieces in the show contain images of reflection for Lamson and express nuances of color.
For example, “Rockbridge Wine Country” was photographed when she visited there last year. It reminds her of a drawing she made in graduate school.
Lamson, who teaches graphic design at Cosby Public High School in Chesterfield County, enjoys explaining how each of her pieces was created and also hearing about others’ responses to them.
People have often told her that they don’t look so much like paintings as they look like stories.
Lamson, whose first solo exhibit was also at Visual Art Studio in 2001, will be at the gallery for Saturday Stroll from noon to 3 p.m. tomorrow. She will also be available for an Artist Talk at 6 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 24.
Visual Art Studio is located at 208 West Broad Street and can be reached at 804/644-1368. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday, noon to 6 p.m. and Saturday, noon to 4 p.m.
