Susan G. Komen for the Cure sparking online discussion

The online community is actively discussing the controversy swirling around the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. Tonight, as more reports surface about employees resigning, there are many questions being batted about online.

The Pink movement for breast cancer awareness has had tremendous support from corporate and private donors. Their efforts have fallen under scrutiny, especially since their discontinuation of funding to Planned Parenthood.

The issues regarding Planned Parenthood's endorsement and promotion of abortion are a very emotionally charged and subjective issue, however the company's actual documented figures are not.  The figures showing the actual research conducted, services provided, salaries paid to employees, and alliances with private businesses are all objective and easily accessed.

Here is the Better Business Bureau Charity Review that you can examine.

A very controversial article published on a a food blog called, "Butter Believer," has put forth the Komen for the Cure figures in graph format that makes them easy to understand, whether you agree with the writer's opinions about breast cancer treatment or not. One of these graphs may explain the angst that is easily sensed in the comments.

The graph shows that while 39.1% of the "pie" went to public awareness and 20.9% went to research, only 5.6% went to treatment. These figures were for 2009-2010, before the discontinuation of Planned Parenthood funding.

There are voices who remind us that the recent attention paid to Komen for the Cure is due to their stand against a pro-abortion organization, and there may be some truth there. It is also true that in times of economic distress, pragmatic thinking takes over. (Be sure and notice the salaries of the employees published in this article.)

While there may be people who need to be reminded about breast cancer, the truth is that most of us now know that it exists and that we should be checked regularly. The problem lies in affording mammograms and the treatment needed! It is enlightening to ask women around the Tri-Cities when they had their last mammogram.

In Tennessee, there is an organization that provides financial support to women undergoing breast cancer treatment. The Tennessee Breast Cancer Coalition is located in Old Hickory, Tennessee, and the phone number is:  615-377-8777.
