The Dexter Chess Challenge organized by Dexter Community Education took place at Bates Elementary School on March 16th.
Top seed Surya Parasuraman won the K-8 rated section with a perfect 4-0 score. Four players tied for second place with three points: Tony Zhao, Jade Ge, Siddharth Jha and Joseph Weber. Arjun Bajaj (top K-3), Ben Li (top K-5) and Conor Kolka (top Unrated) also took home trophies in this section.
Justin Song won the K-3 rated section with a perfect score and three players tied for second place: Rishi Shetty, Tai Karir and Joshua Lee. Nathan Ouyang and Alexander Bauer also won trophies for having the best score in second and third grade, respectively.
In the unrated section, Eleanor Klinger won first place with four wins. Three Dexter Chess Club members playing in their first chess tournament also won trophies in this section: Parker Frye (second place), Justin Hu (third place) & Zachary Erps (top K-2).
The tournament was directed (and photographed) by current Michigan Chess Association (MCA) president Jennifer Skidmore. Her next tournament will be the 72nd Friday Knight Quads on March 29 at 6pm at the Garden Market Café in Ann Arbor. Skidmore is also accepting entries for the Knight Relocation Chess Camp in July. The next Dexter Chess Challenge is scheduled for April 13th at Cornerstone Elementary School. Entries are currently being accepted online at onlinedexter.com.
