Today (Friday, January 11, 2013) CBS announced the cast of the new season of “Survivor” which will air on February 13, 2013 and be called “Survivor: Caramoan – Fans Vs. Favorites.” As the title says, this season will see the return of some of the past favorites from different seasons as well as new players who are big fans of the show.
This is the second time the show will pit fans against favorites. This time around the groups will start off in two tribes with the fans forming one tribe (Gota) and the favorites forming the other (Bikal). Among the fans are a woman named Sherri who is such a fan she named her son after “Survivor” season 2 favorite Colby Donaldson. There is also a Marine named Shamar who says that his goal is to make things so miserable that people will want to quit the show. Hope, one of this season’s resident hotties is a pre law student and former Miss Missouri and Matt is a guy with tattoos, long hair and a long beard who claims that his strategy is to look tough, but show them his sensitive side.
The favorite’s tribe is made up of a varied group of past contestants that have caused chaos, looked hot, annoyed people, created controversy, played well or simply did things that shocked people. Included here is Phillip from “Survivor: Redemption Island.” He made it to the final three by acting strange, wearing pink underwear and making sure to let everyone know that he was once a federal agent. Cochran from “Survivor: South Pacific” is also back. He was terrible at challenges, terrible at doing anything around camp, terrible at making alliances and eventually turned on his tribe and was voted out. Malcolm from last season’s “Survivor: Philippines” is back. He came close to making it to the final three, but was eventually voted off just before the finals. Also returning is Francesca from “Survivor: Redemption Island.” She is most well-known for her constant battles with Phillip and his inability to say her name. We also see the return of the infamous Brandon Hantz, nephew of Russell Hantz. He came close to the end during his first appearance on “Survivor: South Pacific,” but eventually gave up his immunity necklace and was promptly voted off. Brandon was a loose cannon who seemed to be wrestling with inner demons the entire time he was on the show.
The show appears to have an eclectic, interesting group of people that could blend together to make for a fun 26th season of the show. I like that they are starting all the returning favorites in one tribe. They will have an advantage of sorts having played before, but their egos could get in their way. It should be a drama packed season as we watch this new cast battle it out to see who will win the million dollar prize.
