'Survivor: Cagayan', Episode 8 preview: 'Mad Treasure Hunt'

There are only two ways to be safe on "Survivor: Cagayan," according to the video preview (left of this column) of tonight's episode: You must either have an Immunity Idol or you must win the Immunity Challenge. Following last week's stellar, shocking and jaw-dropping Tribal Council, Kass may need to make sure she has one or the other if she's going to make it any further in the game.

Yes Kass ultimately flipped on her tribemates to vote out Sarah, who had thought she was firmly in the middle of two alliances of five. Kass did not seem to care all that much for Sarah, who insisted on giving her opinions and trying to lead the group's vote. But in doing so, Kass will now have to deal with the fall-out of flipping on her long-time Brains allies, Spencer and Tasha. Now in the majority, Tony and LJ's group doesn't necessarily need Kass anymore anyways, so it will be interesting to see where Kass fits in moving forward. Conversely, Kass might have just made herself a sure-fire pick as someone that everybody would like to take with them to the Final Three, knowing that she doesn't stand much of a chance of winning over a sure-to-be-bitter jury.

Although we will definitely (hopefully) get some insight tonight as to Kass's decision, the episode's main theme will be surrounding this mysterious new "Super Idol," a hidden Immunity Idol that has yet-to-be-announced special powers. Here is the synopsis directly from CBS:

Episode 8 – “Mad Treasure Hunt” - THE ENTIRE TRIBE EMBARKS ON THE CRAZIEST IDOL HUNT IN THE HISTORY OF THE GAME, ON “SURVIVOR,” WEDNESDAY, APRIL 9. The entire tribe embarks on the craziest idol hunt in the history of the game. Also, one castaway showcases their ninja-like skills to sabotage another, on SURVIVOR, Wednesday, April 9 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

Analysis. Part of the fallout from last week will also involve both Tony and LJ playing their Immunity Idols on each other. At this point in the game heading into tonight, there are zero hidden Immunity Idols in possession, making the discovery of the "Super Idol" all the more intriguing. What will it do? How will it change the game? Who will find it? Will we have to wait past tonight's episode in order to find any of this out?

Tony playing his Idol on LJ may have been a smart strategic move in the moment, but there is not much of an intelligent defense of why LJ would have played his Idol on Tony. Looking back, neither needed to play their Idols, but at least Tony had reason to believe that LJ was being targeted. LJ's move to play his Idol was not only a poor move for his own game, but Tony was not the target at that point at the Tribal Council and in playing the Idol, LJ and Tony now appear to be an obviously loyal duo. If you are Jefra or some of the other Beauties, you would have to wonder about LJ, who successfully hid knowledge of his Idol for several days. The fact that LJ and Tony would do this for one another might work against them in the eyes of the others.

As mentioned, Kass could become the easy target for all tonight. Clearly Spencer, Morgan and Tasha will not want her in the game any longer and the majority tribe could peg her as an easy vote...even without her they maintain the numbers. If Kass is not the target, Tony and LJ may next target Jeremiah, who may be perceived as the "strongest" of the minority alliance still remaining.

Immunity has never been more important thus far. It will definitely be interesting to see how this new Idol effects the game, and if its special powers go over well with fans of the show. It would be a shame to have some lame "Medallion of Power"-esque twist get introduced in the middle of what has been a very entertaining and unpredictable season.
