Last week was a pretty bizarre episode of Survivor, if you think about it. Colton quit the game and Probst claimed on air that he had, in fact, quit the game previously (we had all thought he had just been medically evacuated). Then, in his post-episode interview, he rebuked Probst's allegations, standing firm that he had not quit Survivor: One World. Who to believe? Does anyone care?
Colton definitely provided some provocative television in his three episodes this season...at least it wasn't racially-charged this time around. Colton is now in the rear-view mirror with his fiance Caleb still alive and seemingly well in the game. His alliance - what I'm calling "The Brigade 2.0," consisting also of Hayden, Brad and Vytas - turned on one of their own last week and sent Candice's husband John out of the game, with two clues to the hidden Idol in his possession.
And of course, by "out of the game" I mean "to Redemption Island," where we will get one of the two promised "Survivor firsts" of tonight's episode: Where we will see a husband and a wife face off against one another in a Redemption Island (three-way) Duel.
Episode 4 - "One Armed Dude and Three Moms" – FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, A REDEMPTION ISLAND BATTLE PITS HUSBAND AGAINST WIFE, ON “SURVIVOR: BLOOD VS. WATER,” WEDNESDAY, OCT. 9. For the first time ever, a Redemption Island battle pits husband against wife. In another series first, a castaway refuses to accept an immunity clue and a shocking blindside at tribal sends another castaway home, on SURVIVOR: BLOOD VS. WATER, Wednesday, Oct. 9 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
Analysis. So there you have it: Survivor first number one? Husband versus wife in a Duel. Survivor first number two? a castaway refuses to accept a clue to the hidden Immunity Idol. And what's this about another shocking blindside?
Let's start at Redemption Island. The preview clearly shows that John and Candice are not all too happy with Brad, who orchestrated John's blindside. Can both John and Candice survive the Duel? Their only chance of doing so, of course, is to finish in first and second place during the Duel, which would send Marissa home. From the press images, we see the three of them competing in what looks like a puzzle challenge, so per norm, the Duel will require patience and focus over physicality in order to come out on top. It's truly anyone's game down in the loser's bracket.
Now on island, what sort of blindside could be both "shocking" and lead Probst to say (in the preview video to the left of this column): "Well that is one of the biggest shifts of power that have ever happened at Tribal Council."? This comment leaves me to believe that it will be the new players - yet again - returning to Tribal Council this week. How could there be a big "shift in power" at the returning players tribe, when we haven't even established who was in power? Clearly it wouldn't be enough to qualify it as "one of the biggest...ever."
So, using deductive reasoning, could tonight be the night when Brad finally gets bamboozled? That would be one hefty shift of power. With Ciera and Katie still in the minority though, the only way Brad gets blindsided is if the others - Vytas, Caleb and Hayden - decide to turn on him. Wow, how exciting to think of Brad on Redemption Island with the likes of both Candice and John, if that scenario were to shake out.
We shall see what happens! See you tonight for the full recap! Feel free to post your thoughts below!
How This Works: As the Survivor Examiner, I'm here for you each and every season to bring you the most wall-to-wall Survivor coverage out there. Each week, you can expect an episode preview on Wednesday morning detailing the upcoming episode and getting you up to speed in case you missed anything from the previous week. Then later on Wednesday night, expect my full episode recap. My recaps tend to be very detailed from start to finish...there's enough smarmy comedians out there recapping the show each week, I'd rather provide you with the entire rundown of the episode. That doesn't mean it's devoid of opinion...because linked to every episode recap article is my Survivor Episode Analysis column, which I write following each episode over at TheTVKing.com.
And that's not all. Every Thursday, you can join me for my exclusive one-on-one exit interview with each voted off castaway. Join me tomorrow for more exclusive interviews!
