According to a report today from MCV-UK, the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 could generate $1.9 billion –– and as high as $4.8 billion –– for United Kingdom retailers during the 2013 holiday shopping season.
A report from the Entertainment Retailer’s Association says that 3.1 million units could be sold before Christmas –– 1.8 million PS4s and 1.3 million Xbox Ones –– making it the highest grossing holiday season for U.K. games stores in history.
“The drama and excitement generated by PS4 and Xbox One looks set to produce the sales boost retailers have been crying out for,” said ERA director Kim Bayley.
The ERA did caution, however, that because of potential stock shortages in the U.K. it’s unlikely that retailers will be able to meet demand for the PS4 and Xbox One during the season.
The study of 2,000 consumers also expected sales of video games to outshine music and video combine during the holiday season in the U.K.
The PS4 hits shelves in North America on Nov. 15 and Europe on Nov. 29. The Xbox One launches in the U.S, U.K. and 11 other markets on Nov. 22.
