I received something wonderful in the mail the other day – my tickets for the 2013 Monterey Jazz Festival.
As long-time readers will recall, I am an unabashed MJF fan. This September will mark my 15th consecutive festival and each has been a musically inspiring – dare one say, life-affirming – event. Monterey is among the highlights of my year, a true gathering of the jazz faithful and a remarkable event that more Northern Californians should access.
I no doubt stated as much last fall when I was among the many ticket-holders the festival contacted to complete a marketing survey. MJF threw in a powerful incentive to ratchet up participation: otherwise unavailable access to one of the festival’s on-site clubs.
So I completed the survey. And then, nothing. No updates emerged over the ensuing months. There was no pass or any such document among the tickets I received.
What gives? I contacted MJF and, in very short order, received the following reply.
Thank you for reaching out. We are excited to hear that you will be attending the Festival in September. It should be a great time!
The incentive for the survey was actually admission to the Artist Bar not the Premier Club, which remains exclusive to those patrons that pay for this specialty hospitality club.
Because a partner has come along and chosen to sponsor the Artist Bar & patio (located next to the Premier Club) we will be offering merchandise coupons. Those will be e-mailed to customers closer to the festival. Hopefully this clears up any misunderstanding you may have had.
Monterey Jazz Festival
One point to make.
When MJF contacted ticket-holders regarding the survey, I recollect no proviso stating we’d get access to the club provided the festival didn’t get a better offer from someone else. Club access not coupons was the promised incentive. All who in good faith completed the survey – whether they desired the proffered incentive or not – have the right to think this change smacks a bit of bait-and-switch. Very un-MJF.
