Surprising Winter Getaways in the Four Corners

Ski areas in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico have some extra surprises for travelers.  In addition to skiing and snowboarding in places like Telluride, and Taos, Purgatory and Wolf Creek there are  other places providing unique fun in the snow nearby.

If you are up for a last minute getaway, Ghost Ranch in northern New Mexico has a Winter Magic cross-country ski package from January 24, to January 29.  Ghost Ranch is a magical place in the heart of Georgia O’Keefe country.  It is a retreat and education center near the village of Abiquiu   The cross-country ski event will include guided tours over snow covered trails to observe plants and animals in the winter terrain.  The skis, transportation and a spa dinner are part of the package.  http://www.ghostranch.org

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to race through the snow behind a pack of huskies?  Just to the west of Durango, off of Hwy 160 you can go dog sledding at the Durango Dog Ranch. They offer guided tours by dog sled and a chance to drive the sled yourself.  The ranch has a range of experiences, half day and day long treks. But, “Mush on the Brain” sounds like one to start out with.  It is a two-hour excursion, a walk through the kennels, harnessing the dogs, the sled ride and a mug of hot chocolate. No Canadian Mounties were mentioned but still this sounds like lots of fun. http://www.durangodogranch.com/

For the bold hiker the Bisti Wilderness, just 37 miles south of Farmington, NM on Rt. 371, is open year round.  Many think the winter is one of the best times to explore this weirdly beautiful area of rock formations, hoodoos and fossils of ancient dinosaurs.  It does snow at the Bisti, but the snow doesn’t last.  Daytime temperatures even in winter can rise to 70.  While there is a parking lot at the entrance, there are no services or signs to lead the way in the Bisti. There are also no fees.  It is truly a wilderness; bring water and a camera for a wonderful winter adventure.
