The Fredericksburg area got a surprise snowfall on the evening of St. Patrick’s Day. The roads were slick and wet as people were leaving their Sunday dinners of corned beef and cabbage. “Maybe we’ll have a day off,” remarked a teacher overheard on the way out of dinner. Her wish was granted as area residents woke up Monday morning to a snow covered landscape and the radio announcing the list of school delays and closings.
Prince William, Stafford, and Spotsylvania counties as well as the City of Fredericksburg all had a school announcement on WBQB radio. Spotsylvania County Schools put out an e-message at 5:51 a.m. stating “All schools will have a 2-hour delay on March 18, 2013.” The snow continued to fall as the morning wore on and the school district sent out an update at 6:50 a.m. stating “UPDATE: March 18, 2013 - Schools closed, 12-month employees report 2 hours late.”
Teachers and students alike enjoyed a surprise St. Patrick’s Day three day weekend. Virginia can have unpredictable weather in March. It’s no surprise that the saying “in like a lion, out like a lamb” fits this region of Virginia.
