Surgeon left 16 items in body causing German pensioner's death

A surgeon left 16 items in a body after surgery, which ended up causing a German pensioner's death, according to a Jan. 15 Daily Mail report. Dirk Schroeder, 74, died after his surgery where the surgeon left 16 items inside his body.

It seems that Dirk Schroeder underwent routine surgery for prostrate cancer and he was given six years to live. However, because of the surgeon's unbelievable mistake, he suffered terribly and later died.

Before his death, he underwent surgery again when it became obvious that something was wrong after a nurse saw a gauze pad coming out of his wound. Among the 16 items removed from Dirk Schroeder during his second surgery were a needle, a bandage roll, a six-inch long compress, multiple swabs, and part of a surgical mask.

Now his family is suing for $121,000 in compensation. It is incredible that a surgeon could leave 16 items in a body. Sometimes items are left behind, but 16 is absolutely negligent. The unidentified hospital has said that the items entered the man post operation.
