Surge defeat Yamhill C.C. to advance in the U.S. Open Cup tournament

The Sacramento Surge played host to the Yamhill County Crew last night in a bracket match for the U.S. Open Arena Soccer Cup. The winner will face the Bay Area Rosal in the Round of Sixteen. A fans were anticipating an exciting contest between the two teams who were hungry for a win and were looking forward to making that one step closer to the Cup. Sacramento was also looking forward to gaining some momentum when they resume the second half of League play in the new year.

Sacramento and Yamhill battled each other to a 0-0 draw in the first period. The County Crew's speed and finesse baffled the Surge whilst their strength and aggressiveness plagued them. The second period is when the action picked up. After spending a whole period trying to figure out and exploit each others weakness, Yamhill struck first leading 1-0. Sacramento came back an scored two rocket blasting goals taking the lead 2-1 before the County Crew rallied to tie the game by scoring a quick goal to tie up the game 2-2 before going into the half.

The third period was all Yamhill. Their speed and finesse style of play confused the Surge's defense whilst only them to score at will. They pressed Sacramento's defense and poured it on by taking a lot of shot-on-goals. Yamhill also took advantage of a couple of blue cards that were given to the Surge and outscored them 4-2 to take a commanding 6-4 lead in the fourth. Everything was looking bleak for the Surge until they played iron curtain defense and attacked Yamhill's goalie with an intense offensive vigor that netted Sacramento five straight goals. In the last minute of the game a near fight and dirty play cost both teams a yellow and red cards. But it had little effect on the game as the Surge come from behind to win the game 9-6.

Sacramento advances to the next round to play against the Bay Area Rosal at a date to be determined. The Surge's next home game will held on January 4th against the Bay Area Rosal, their rivalry will continue after the new year. Tickets for this game can be purchased either at or at the Estadio Azteca box office. Admission is just $10 for adults and $5 for youths 14 and under.
