On Thursday, April 17, 2014, Dick Dale will rock Houston well into the night! The show starts at 10 pm at the Continental Club. Tickets are available for $25. Dick Dale (born Richard Anthony Monsour) did what surfers do best; he used innovation to revolutionize a medium. Tales of Dale playing the Fender Stratocaster upside down and backwards have reached far and wide, almost as wide as his influence. A culprit in the repute of the Fender reverb, distortion, and amplification, Dale invented what musicians refer to today as the genre of surf rock. Depicting a picture of Dale surfing by the pier in San Clemente, his album (Surfers’ Choice) was the first of its kind to be commercially sold. It is customary for the surf community to bestow a fitting nickname. Although exceptional, he is no exception to the social norm. The in-water surf family dubbed Dale the “King of the Surf Guitar.”

Since birthing surf rock in the 1950s, Dick Dale can be attributed to everything from the metal movement to recording material at Disneyland. The song “Miserlou” is widely known for being featured in Pulp Fiction. Other popular songs are “Ghost Riders in the Sky” and “Surfing Drums.” He even played “Pipeline” with the legendary Stevie Ray Vaughan. In addition, his music has appeared in countless films and commercial advertisements. His unique mastery of tonality and cadence enchant the listening ear. Late into the night and now in his late seventies, Dale is certain to put on a show bursting with positive vibrations.
